Library Student Worker Guide: Opening & Closing Procedures

Opening Procedure

The student opener is responsible for the following:

  • Turning on the lights on the 3rd and 4th floors as well as all the stacks. Please remember to turn on the lamp by the main doors as well as the entryway light in the vestibule.
  • In nice weather (Spring, Summer, early Fall) open the Patio using the 1415 key.
  • Turn on the circulation desk computers and login to all computer programs (Evergreen, cash register, papercut, etc.)
  • While you are opening double check that furniture is straightened and in the correct places (as chairs tend to travel). Also, check that there isn't any trash on any tables or study carrels.
  • Unlock the main doors a few minutes ahead of general library opening.
  • If there is time, the Circulation Manager may ask you to do a few extra tasks.

Weekday Student Openers

A part of the student opener's responsibility during the week (M-F) is pulling books for the pull list. This video shows you how to do that.

The Pull List is found on the homepage. Usually, you will want to organize these books by shelving location so you can pull all items in a stack at once. By clicking on the "Shelving Location" button once, you will get a top-down organization (ie. Stack 5 is at the top and Stack 1 is at the bottom). Selecting "Shelving Location" a second time will give you a bottom-up organization (ie. Stack 1 is at the top and Stack 5 is at the bottom). On the rare occasion, you may be asked to organize the pull list by date - again, you'll want to hit this twice in order to have the most recent dates at the top of the page.

Once you have organized the pull list the way you want it you will choose "Print the Full List". You will be printing the list to the printer under the computer at the circulation desk closest to the swinging half door. Make sure that the "Printer under this Computer" option is chosen and not the Receipt Printer!

Closing Procedure

The library student closer oversees the following:

  • Straighten furniture in the library, including group study rooms.
  • Collect any stray books or other library material and return to circulation desk.
  • Close all open windows around the library.
  • Close the patio door using the 1415 key.
  • At 15-minutes to library closing: start initial walk through of the library and let students know the library is closing soon.
  • At official library closing time: close all entrances to Jenks to secure the building.
  • After official library closing time: Turn lights off & clean up on 3rd and 4th floors as well as the stacks.
    • As you are turning off lights, please make sure that all study room lights are also turned off.
    • The lights in both the women's and men's bathrooms on the 3rd and 4th floors need to be turned off. Please make sure that all windows are shut and locked.
    • Straighten any furniture that has been obviously moved, place books that are in locations they should not be bring them to the circulation desk and check them in, and throw away any trash on tables and study carrels.
