End Goal:

After completion of Section 1 on your journey through the Roadmap to Research, you will be able to:

  • Identify different types of information sources in order to understand how to use them appropriately in research.

Information Cycle

Social media & TV report that day. Newspapers report that week. Journals report next month. Books analyze next year.

We live in an age of rapid information creation and consumption. Between the internet, television, phones, and other devices, we gather information daily to help us navigate and process our everyday lives.

Understanding the Information Cycle, or the way in which information is produced and distributed over time, can help you know what kind of information may be available surrounding your research question.

Formats of Information

The information cycle shows us that we are constantly engaged with information at different levels and in different formats. However, as good researchers, we should be able to understand how formats, publication dates, and publishing companies can give insight into the credibility of the information. Our research should help us find information that will truly be valuable in our writing.

Watch the video below to learn more about how the publication process impacts the credibility of information.

Navigate back to Canvas and submit your 10-word discussion on format.
